#2: BEHOLD, YONDER PLAINS OF ABE

03.08

Mercantilism:

economic relations between Britain and U.S.

- dependent on them for supplies, etc.

- triangle trade

- they bought from us then sold it back for 2x

- colonies exist for good of mother country

- colonies both market and raw materials

- rum-running!

Pros:

- constant flow of cash

- able to get products from other countries b/c of Britain

- strongest navy in the world to protect us

- middle class emerged (merchants)

- benefit from industrial revolution

Cons:

- currency problem: each colony had different currency

- for int'l trade: had to use Britain's money

- all resources went to Britain

- could not trade w/ other countries

- needed to smuggle

- some colonies became very wealthy (New England)

- middle colonies suffered

1754 - 63: Seven Year's War (Br. v. Fr.)

- in America: French-Indian War

- we considered ourselves British; v. French and Indians

- causes:

- Ohio Valley

- richest land

- near Great Lakes

- transportation to Atlantic

- French wanted fur, forts (Indian alliances)

- control of Mississippi

- compete w/ Br. for colonies

- British came for economy, religion, and new life

- also, primogeniture; first son gets land and a title while other sons get SHAFTED

- French: econ only

- today, do not control Canada

- Virginia was wealthiest colony (tobacco)

- wanted more land by expanding into Ohio Valley

- colonists very independent (salutary neglect)

- middlemen in mercantilism

- shopkeepers, shippers

- wars had pushed Indians into Ohio Valley

- alliances w/ both Br. and Fr.

- governor of Virginia (Din Widdell) sent George Washington to establish Fort Necessity in Ohio River Valley

- defeated by opposition at Fort Duquesne

- Gen. Wolfe: British general w/ America

- Gen. Montcomme: French general

- "US born on Plains of Abraham": Fort Quebec

- French lose!

- otherwise, we'd be French

- significance of war:

- colonists more confident

- French retreated

- Americans defeated an entire country!

Proclamation of 1763:

- settlers cannot go west of Appalachians

- Indians already living there; would violate British agreement

- wanted to keep colonists manageable

End of salutary neglect

- no more home rule D:

- king sent royal governors

- not from the colonies!

- colonists: WTF ENGLAND WE DON'T NEED YOUR STUPID PROTECTION

- war debt resulted from defense of colonies

- time to pay up!

Unrest = Revolution oh noes

Join or Die! (Ben Franklin)

- Albany Plan: unite colonies to fight Indians

- colonial identity: not unified

- New England already unified

- composed of townships; already fought Indians

War of JENKIN'S EAR

- 1739: Britain v. Spain

- confined to area of Georgia

- acted as a buffer
